Our story

A taste of India and Nepal, in the centre of Amsterdam

In Nepali, Lumbini means “lovely” — and it is also the sacred garden where the Buddha was born. We carried that name from the Himalayas to Amstel 32, a few steps from Rembrandtplein, Muntplein and the Flower Market.

Lumbini is an authentic Indian restaurant in Amsterdam and one of the city’s genuine Nepalese restaurants. Our chefs cook two living traditions side by side: rich North-Indian curries, tandoori and biryani alongside true Nepalese plates like momos and Dal Bhat — every dish made fresh, with whole spices and care.

Whether you are looking for the best Indian food in Amsterdam for dinner, comforting Nepalese food for lunch, or catering for a gathering, you will find a warm welcome at our table.

Why guests choose us

Two cuisines, cooked the way they should be

Most places in the city offer one or the other. At Lumbini you get both India and Nepal, made by chefs who grew up cooking them.

Genuinely Nepalese

Not Indian food with a Nepalese label — real momos, Dal Bhat and Himalayan plates, alongside our Indian menu.

Fresh, whole spices

We grind and cook with fresh ingredients and traditional techniques, so every curry tastes like it should.

Right in the centre

Steps from Rembrandtplein, Muntplein and the Flower Market — easy to reach by tram or on foot.

Spice to your taste

Mild, medium or fiery — just tell us. Our kitchen happily adjusts the heat for every guest.

Vegetarian & vegan

A large part of our menu is vegetarian, with plenty of vegan-friendly choices that don’t feel like an afterthought.

Warm, honest service

Friendly, attentive hospitality that keeps locals and travellers coming back, dinner after dinner.

Lumbini is perfectly located in city centre near Rembrandtpleim. I asked for take away, the lady who was helping with order was superfriendly and kind. I ordered Lamb Tikka Masala and Mango Lassi. Lamb Tikka Masala is the best i tried in Netherlands so far. Very flavourful, i guess it contains some cashew nuts which makes it even more perfect, i asked for medium spicy, and it was great, lamb was supertender, the portion is really good. Mango chutney was splendid. Mango lassi is also worth to try. Highly recommended will definitely come with friends to try other dishes as well, perfect for sharing

We spontaneously found this hidden gem during our stay. They serve authentic Nepalese cuisine. The spice level was high (as per my liking, upon request). Highly recommended!!!

It was our last day in Amsterdam and we wanted to have some Indian food. So, for dinner we landed in this restaurant which serves both Indian and Nepalese food.

We tried Biriyani, Plain Rice, Lentil Fry (Dal Tadka) and some chicken item. They were tasty and we liked all of them. They also served Papad (crispy Indian flatbread) with the food. By the way, being geographically connected Indian and Nepalese dishes have a lot of similarities.

The atmosphere was pleasant, and the service truly lived up to the place’s reputation. The staff were warm and welcoming. Being from West Bengal, I even had a conversation in Bengali with one of them who, not surprisingly, spoke it very well. Do give it a visit and you won’t be disappointed.

I also find the name of the restaurant interesting. For those who do not know, Lumbini is the birth place of Gautama Buddha.

We went there to try Nepali food, though the flavors were closer to Indian cuisine. The food was good but a little overpriced. Communication with the staff wasn’t very clear — our order was misunderstood, and we ended up with three portions of the same dish, paying much more than expected. If you’re a tourist, just be a bit careful when ordering, and you should still enjoy the experience.

Amazing experience in the authentic Indian restaurant. The flavors are real, just be sure when we order one mild and one super spicy, you don't mix it up otherwise the final experience can be different. 😊

I would replace the cheap looking paper tablecloth for something nicer and more authentic.
Thank you for the nice experience!

I recently had the pleasure of dining at Lumbini Restaurant in Amsterdam, and it was an outstanding experience from start to finish!

From the moment we were seated at the table , were greeted warmly by the manager. The attentive service set the tone for the rest of the evening.

**The food was absolutely delicious:**

- **Dal Soup:** Rich and flavorful, perfect to start our meal.
- **Veg Samosas:** Crispy on the outside and filled with a delightful blend of spices.
- **Aloo Tama Bodi:** A fantastic dish that left us wanting more with its unique flavors.
- **Butter Chicken:** Creamy, tender, and beautifully spiced, this dish was a highlight.
- **Butter Naan:** Perfectly baked and complemented our main courses wonderfully.
- **Beverages:** The Coca Cola and Cola Zero were served refreshingly cold.
- **Desserts:** We ended our meal with Gulab Jamun, which was sweet and satisfying, and Kheer, a creamy delight.

The ambiance at Lumbini Restaurant added to the overall experience. It was cozy and inviting, making it a perfect spot for a relaxed evening out.
As we left, we were thanked and invited to return with a warm "BEDANKT EN TOT ZIENS." We certainly will be back to enjoy more of their delicious offerings!

If you’re in Amsterdam and looking for an exceptional dining experience with a wonderful atmosphere and top-notch service, I highly recommend Lumbini Restaurant!

Cute spot with delicious food and the most charming service. As a group we had the vegetarian samosas, paneer butter masala, vegetable korma, and vegetable biryani with garlic naan and a bottle of cava.

Good Indian and strong flavours. The best 👌 were the momos' hands down. The classics are available, and you may want to ask for a little less spicy if you can't handle too much heat. Fun and enjoyable. As always, good vegetarian and kids food options #IndianFood #MomoLovers #FamilyFriendly

A five-star rating doesn’t accurately reflect the exceptional food and service we enjoyed at Lumbini in Amsterdam. The service was superb, the food was delicious, and the wine selection was great—everything needed for a delightful evening with family. This Indian restaurant is a must-visit, especially for vegetarians, due to its wide range of vegetarian options.
